Sins of the Fathers

We will pay for the sins of the fathers
and the mothers, sisters, aunts, and uncles
to the third and the fourth generation,
but most of all our own.
So pass the plate and the glass,
and douse me in the blood,
because I have ever so much
that needs atoning for.

Grasping Not Reaching

When my gift died
and I lost my voice
I lost the ability to
introspect.

I no longer know
my own thoughts
or how to find
the contents of my mind.

Emotions are a mist
and feelings a fog
that I muddle through
grasping, not reaching,

observing, not experiencing,
understanding, not knowing.
And if I had knowledge
I lack the words to tell you of it.

In Your Light, We See Light

If heaven is in the center of the universe
and if heaven is where you live,
then I understand why the planets
are rushing away.
They know they can not match
Your holiness.
And I understand why we don’t understand
light, as it rushes towards our planet
from distant stars. How could man
know the distance traveled by relative bodies
when we don’t understand the source of Light?

Refrain

Tomorrow will be a good day,
and this will be a good night,
and this is a good life.
Hallelujah forever, amen.
Tomorrow may not be an easy day
and tonight may not be an easy night
and it may not be an easy life.
Hallelujah forever, amen.
Someone remind me, please,
of the ways of God,
but if no one speaks them to me,
I will speak them to myself.
Hallelujah forever, amen.
Through a year as long as a life,
through days that felt like nights,
I still only want to see God.
Hallelujah forever, amen.

God of Medicine

For Karis, Trevor, and Katie Almy

Great Physician, true vision
of the Healer God,
the one the pagans called
Apollo, Asclepius, Hygieigia,
Nodens, Apis, Ebisu, or Osiris.
They are all faded images
of the glory of You,
the true Healing God.
You answer prayers like poems
Or one word anguished cries
for relief from symptoms and pain,
For cures to diseases, curable or not.
You set bones that can’t be set.
You stop bleeding that should continue to pour.
You lower fevers that should keep burning.
You preserve life that we think is ending.
Where science says Death.
You say Life.
When we ask for cures
And science says No.
You say Yes.
